Spanish for the Health Professions
Course Objectives:
  • Learn About:
    • The terminology and their expressed relationships between the human body and its function.
    • Medicine and Patient-Provider relationship.
  • Develop linguistic competence and auditory comprehension.
  • Recognize cultural signs that distinguish attitude & Hispanic patients' point of views.
         

Experience: In this class, I learned about the importance of cultural competence when interacting with people of different cultures. It is essential to keep an open mind and perspective, as peoples' cultures and beliefs vary, and we could have miscommunication if we are not culturally aware.

Course Objectives:

  • Recognize, analyze, and make valuable judgments about Spanish-speaking immigrants' experience in the United States.

  • Deepen cultural knowledge and linguistics about the theme of immigration.

  • Create a documentary that details the immigration experience of Spanish speakers.

    • Life before immigration​

    • Adjustment process

    • Concept of home and family

    • Life advice

Spanish in the Community

Experience: In this class, I was able to learn about the immigration process to the United States, and how this transition process affected the person's life. A person's culture identity and background are an integral part of his or her life, and the documentary allowed individuals to share their unique stories.  

Intro to Spanish Linguistics

Course Objectives:

  • Introduction to relevant areas of Spanish Linguistics.

  • Emphasis on:

    • Phonetics and phonology​

    • History and evolution of Spanish

    • Acquisition of first and second languages

    • Morphology-Formation of words

    • Syntax-Sentence structure

    • Dialectology- Regional and social variation

Experience: In this class, I began learning about the linguistic side of the Spanish language. With morphology, sentence syntax, and dialectology, I deepened my understanding of the Spanish language and how it is structured similarily but also differently from English.
